The one thing I love about the fall season are MUMS! They are such a beautiful fall flower, come in so many different colors and can last for a few months if cared for properly. Today, I am going to share a few tips on keeping them blooming all the way through Thanksgiving.
First, when buying your mums for the season, make sure you choose ones that have tight buds. This will ensure the longest bloom time. Once they fully bloom, they can last almost 6-8 weeks! I always try to buy them in early October as September is still pretty hot here. The hot weather can dry them out more quickly.
Next, keep them well watered. Make sure you water from below and not directly on the top of the plant. Try not to drench the leaves and buds. A good schedule is to water them about every 2-3 days or if its a very hot fall day. Let them drain too before placing them back in their pot.
I always try and deadhead them frequently by pulling off any wilted or dead leaves and stems. They also need at least 6 hours of sunlight so don’t place in the shady spot on your porch.
I hope these tips are helpful in ensuring you can enjoy your fall mums all season long! Happy fall!
