The BIG 4-0! Yep I am 40 and I couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate than in Mexico! I always said I didn’t want a big party…all I wanted to do was relax on the beach somewhere with a margarita in my hand! Hubby and I have traveled to quite a few places in Mexico over the past few years but have never made it to Cabo San Lucas. After a friend told me about an amazing resort she stayed at, I was sold! Cabo, here we come!
If you haven’t been, seriously book a trip NOW! We had an amazing time and I honestly can’t wait to go back! Here is where we stayed, where we ate and what we did! This is 40, friends and it was the BEST place to celebrate!!!!
WHERE WE STAYED: There are hundreds of places to stay in the Cabo area! Thankfully a friend had recently stayed at the J.W. Marriott Los Cabos and raved about it! We were sold and I would go back in a heartbeat! The place was just beyond beautiful! The rooms were oversized and GORGEOUS and the service….we were literally waited on hand and foot! Every little thing I could go on and on about…5 star service all the way! It is about a 45 minute from the center of Cabo San Lucas, but unless you want to be hounded by people selling you stuff on the crowded beach, then stay here. It was about a 20 minute drive from the airport, 10 minutes from Flora Farms (I will share more about that later) and about 10 minutes from the downtown area of San Jose del Cabo. I LOVED the location! It was secluded, there literally wasn’t a soul on the beach, it was quiet and honestly the best place to get away and relax! We didn’t have one bad meal, the staff was excellent! Honestly my favorite hotel we have ever stayed….EVER (and we have traveled)!!! Also, the week we went (the week of August 19th) there literally wasn’t a soul there! We pretty much had the entire place to ourselves! Great travel week if you can swing it! The only downside (which didn’t bother us in the least) is that the beach is unswimmable due to the strong current. I didn’t care in the least….we lounged at the one of 13 pools pretty much all day, which had views that couldn’t be beat! If you have kids, they also have a kids and teen club. We can’t wait to go back one day and will definitely bring the kids!
WHAT WE DID: Besides staying poolside pretty much every day, all day….we did hit the amazing hotel gym every morning…we rented a car which I highly recommend. Honestly the roads were not too bad (maybe a little bumpy, but there basically is one main road) and it was easily driveable. Our phone plan worked in Mexico so I was able to get navigation the whole time we were there. Taxis and airport shuttles can get pretty pricey, so it was much cheaper to rent a car for our entire stay, plus the hotel has complimentary valet parking! Renting a car got us to the airport and back and we were able to leisurely venture out for dinner every night. One morning we did travel into Cabo San Lucas to see the famous Arch of Cabo and Lover’s Beach, was which about a 45 minute drive from our hotel. You can certainly book a tour, that will pick you up at your hotel, but it seemed like a long day and we just wanted to see the landmarks leisurely on our own. We drove into Cabo San Lucas, found a public parking garage and then made it onto the public beach through a local hotel. Once on the beach, you are literally hounded by people selling stuff, including a private water taxi ride out to the Arch. For $20 a person, we hopped into one right away and we were off. They took us to all the landmarks, Lover’s Beach, the Arch, we saw the seals, we went around the Arch to see Divorce Beach and more. It was beautiful and well worth it! They did drop us off at Lover’s Beach for about 15 minutes so we could walk around and take pictures. All in all, it was about 45 minutes which was just enough time to see it all! Afterwards, they dropped us right back in the same spot and we headed back to our hotel just in time for lunch!
WHERE WE ATE: If you didn’t want to, you honestly didn’t have to leave the hotel. They had a handful of great restaurants and the food was truly amazing and delish! We ate at the hotel for breakfast and lunch every day. The octopus tacos were to die for!! Cabo is full of amazing restaurants and since we had our own car, we wanted to explore! We were there for 5 nights and the first night since it was a long travel day, we did eat at the hotel! It was delicious and in a gorgeous setting. Here is where we ventured off to the rest of our stay!
Acre Baja: Our concierge recommended this place to us! It is right near Flora Farms and was about 15 minutes from our hotel! Beware, the road gets unpaved but I guess its part of the experience! Acre is a boutique hotel, you can literally stay in one of a handful of treehouses. they have at the property, and they have a really cool restaurant that literally makes you feel like you are in the jungle! It is located in the foothills of the mountains and it honestly beautiful. We went early and had a drink at the bar and dinner was delish. It is all local, farm to table dishes and the atmosphere alone is worth a visit!
Tequila Restaurant: I heavily relied on Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop Guide to Los Cabos and this restaurant came highly recommended. Again, close to our hotel, maybe a 15 minute drive in the quaint town of San Jose del Cabo! Literally you could be on the street and walk right past it, but once you get in, its a beautiful and quaint little place. We were able to sit out in the garden and it was gorgeous! String lights, beautiful plants and trees….a mini oasis! We honestly had the place all to ourselves and even became friendly with the owner. The food was delish and we each had a local seafood dish that was excellent!
Flora Farms: The infamous Flora Farms! I honestly couldn’t wait to eat here! Not only did we celebrate my birthday here with dinner, we loved it so much we went back a second time! Located in the foothills of the mountains, right down the street from Acre, another unpaved road, it is quite the adventure getting there and only about 10-15 minutes from our hotel…it truly was a beautiful and magical place! Just walking around here alone is worth the visit! They also have a few on site shops that we browsed in and bought the kids some souvenirs at. The drinks were EXCELLENT! You need to order the “Farmarita”! The second night we had a pitcher of their summer Sangria and it was amazing! The food is all farm to table, with everything coming straight from the working farm! The first night we had a taste of everything and the second night we tried their homemade pizza which was truly delish! The place is very kid friendly too! The second night they were having a family movie night under the stars! I would eat here every night if I could! Truly a MUST if you are in Cabo!!
This trip was what 40th birthday dreams were made of! I couldn’t have asked for a better or magical place to celebrate! Cabo stole my heart and we will definitely be back!
