When we were building and designing this house, I spent countless hours on Pinterest just pinning away everything I wanted in my dream home. I probably spent the most time on our kitchen and every pin I went back to had gorgeous white marble countertops. I knew no matter what, no matter how many people tried to talk me out of them {everyone!!!} I still wanted my dream kitchen to have marble countertops! I spent hours on end reading all about them, every blog post for, and against, message boards with tips…you name it! When it came time to pick out our countertops, I spent hours at the fabricators looking at samples and they showed me every quartz and quartzite look alike. And I still loved the white Carrara marble! There was no talking me out of it!
I have been getting a ton of questions on our countertops lately! After living with them for a little over a year, I thought I would off er some tips I had for those thinking about getting them! I promise you, marble in the kitchen is not as scary as they all say! I can attest to that! We have 3 young kids who sit at this island and color, eat waffles and syrup, play with slime and guess what….they are ok!! With these tips, maybe you won’t hesitate on marble in your kitchen!
TIP #1: No matter what, get HONED marble and not polished marble. Honed is more forgiving than polished and won’t show every single scratch and etch mark. I am so happy I went with the honed marble! Best advice I was ever given!
TIP #2: Don’t use any citrus based cleaners on your marble! I have tried a few of the all natural products. Most left my counters looking very streaky! The only one I have loved using, and religiously use, is the Murchinson-Home Counter Safe All Purpose Cleaner! The original fig scent smells amazing!
TIP #3: Cutting boards are a must! But let’s be honest, you should be using cutting boards on any countertop surface! I hit up Home Goods and stocked up on a bunch. I keep a few on our countertops and a bunch in a drawer. Tomatoes and again, anything citrus based are not marble countertops friends so I always am sure I have a large cutting board when slicing tomatoes or oranges, lemons or limes. I also use them a trivets when placing down a super hot pot or pan.
TIP #4: Lastly, seal your countertops every 3-6 months! I promise you, this will save your countertops! We have found the 511 Pourous Plus Sealer to be the best one. A little goes a long way! We have had this same bottle for over 2 years.
Also, I wanted to clear up one more misconception about marble! You may hear that marble stains. Now if I were to spill coffee or tea, even red wine on my marble countertops and even leave it for a few hours, it would not leave a stain. Mostly that is due to the sealing the marble. What marble does is something called etch. Etch marks are like dull stains that pretty much blend in with the surface. You honestly have to be standing in just the right light to see them. Etch marks are from things like lemon or lime juice, tomatoes, even apple juice, which surprised me! With time they fade away and almost seep into the marble. When you seal the marble, you can hardly see them.
I will admit the first etch mark or scratch is the toughest. You can be as careful and as mindful as possible but it will happen. But eventually you kind of get over it and learn to have a new love for your marble! The cool surface is perfect for rolling out pizza dough and making homemade pie crusts. I truly love the beauty of the marble and if I could choose again, I would. There is just something about marble in the kitchen that I could never give up! I hope this helps those on the fence!
