Ever wish you could put together a floral arrangement just like a pro? Set it on your table, stand back and say “wow”! I went to a floral design class about a year ago and learned a few tips that I wanted to share today! Practice makes perfect and after a few tries on my own, I learned it was easier than one would think. Here are the steps to creating a flower arrangement just a like a pro!
STEP ONE: Pick your greenery, flowers and filler. I like to grab flowers in the same color scheme and for this arrangement picked deep shades of reds and pinks. Choose at least 2-3 types of greenery (such as eucalyptus or myrtle), 3-4 different types of flowers and then 1-2 smaller fillers (such as stock or gyp). Usually any flower section, even in a grocery store, sells bundles of greenery and/or stock separate from the floral bouquets so you can really choose what you want for your arrangement.
STEP TWO: Choose a large vase or I love using something unique like a milk glass pitcher I snagged from an antique shop. The BIG key here is taping the mouth of your vase. You can use green floral tape but I use good ole Scotch tape! I do it in a grid pattern as seen in the picture below. This really helps in keeping your florals stand up in the vase and the whole arrangement looks more put together. Add the water and then tape.
STEP THREE: First, add the greenery. This is your eucalyptus, myrtle. I love using eucalyptus and its my go to greenery of choice! I place this mostly around the outer edges of the vase and then a few in the center.
STEP FOUR: Next add some of your larger filler flowers such as stock. I try to add them to at least 2 “corner” of the arrangement.
STEP FIVE: Then start adding your flowers. I add some of the larger ones to the center (you will fill this all in later with any leftover greenery and filler) and tuck some underneath the eucalyptus near the edges.
STEP SIX: You may have to play around with the arranging of the flowers but that’s ok. After a few fixes, I ended up with this.
STEP SEVEN: Now you will add your smaller filler such as gyp or baby’s breath. This is where you will fill any “holes” in the arrangement and then if you have any more spots left, add any leftover greenery you may have to fill out the arrangement.
STEP EIGHT: Stand back and be amazed at yourself! You just created a flower arrangement like a pro!
Some more tips…Change the water every other day and trim the stems back as well. This prolongs the life of your arrangement by ensuring the flowers won’t dry out and wilt. So you don’t mess with the design you just made, carefully tip the vase over the sink and drain out the water. Then refill it by gently pouring water (I used a measuring cup) at the top of the flowers. You want your hard work to last as long as possible, don’t you?
I hope these simple steps will inspired you to start creating beautiful arrangements at home!
