For anyone that knows me, I am a sucker for a sweet little farmhouse and I swoon over shiplap walls (thank you Joanna Gaines). It wasn’t a surprise that when we were designing and building our new house I would shiplap as much as I could! Handy husband (aka Aaron) had some limits on the shiplap (for now) and I am so excited to reveal our shiplap fireplace.
For those of you who are wondering what shiplap even is, it’s a wooden board commonly used indoors to often replace drywall way back when. It has certainly made a comeback and is easier to install than one would think. Its the many coats of paint that get me!
Our fireplace wall is a major focal point in the room and we designed our new house with an open concept feel, especially in the main living areas (family room, kitchen and breakfast nook) so I needed something other than plain old drywall. Aaron started by using some of the leftover brick from our mudroom floor as the fireplace surround.
Now Aaron has a trick for the shiplap. He swears its cheaper in materials, lighter in weight, easier to use and level. He uses a 7″ wide v-board pine panel that has a tongue and groove. Since the one side has a beaded trim down the center, he flips it to get the flat panel shiplap look. They come in all different widths as well so you can create any look you want. He has done two walls like this in our new house and swears by it! It’s worth giving a try!
Once all the boards were nailed in and we fixed all the nail holes, the fun part begins….painting! The pine boards just soak up all the paint so for this project it was many coats of primer and then a few coats of my go to paint color Alabaster by Sherwin Williams.
Aaron used a decorating moulding to complete the top and then corner rounded trims all the way down each side to finish it off.
Here it is all primed and painted! I absolutely love it! We have future plans of continuing the shiplap on either side of the fireplace and then building out bookcases. That is a project we are saving for the spring!
I can’t wait to show you all more projects from our new home! Stay tuned!!
