I am so excited to FINALLY share our DIY Master Closet! This week I shared in a series of blog posts the before, the progress and today is the day for the full reveal.
This was a LONG project that took lots of planning, time and patience but the final outcome was well worth it! Without futher ado, here is our master closet…
We have dedicated, custom his and her spaces and then a shared space of all floor to ceiling shelving with room for a hamper for laundry.
This closet was custom built entirely by handy hubby except for the drawers and drawer fronts. They were custom built from a company we found online, The Cabinet Door Store, shipped to us and we installed them ourselves. The drawers ended up being the most expensive part of this project but so worth it in terms of labor and the extra construction in building them. We were also able to get them as soft closed drawers which I really love.
I love the handles I found on Wayfair. And I snagged them on major sale one day which was even better! They come in a few different sizes and finishes. I love the acrylic and brass look. Against the white drawers it truly is beautiful. Shop my handles here.
One of my most favorite features in the closet are the brushed gold closet rods. I can’t tell you how long it took me to find these! Lots of searching on the web but I finally came across a site called Hardware Decor that had many options and finishes to choose from. They even custom cut them for us!
All the Details
How long did this project take? Start to finish this took about 8 weekends worth of work. That includes all the design, measuring, building and installing of the closet. Now, priming and painting…that is a whole other story.
What kind of wood was used? We used cabinet grade plywood purchased at our local Home Depot. There are many different grades you can choose from. We used 3/4″ thick birch and used 8 foot sheets that we cut to size.
What painting process was done? Some would call me crazy for not using a paint sprayer but honestly I didn’t want to deal with the mess. Lots of prep work is involved when using one inside the home. It took lots of TIME but we rolled the whole closet, section by section once it was installed. I used a primer for bare wood, let that cure for a week and then we did two coats of paint. We also let that cure in between each coat. It took time but worth it in the end.
What was the total cost of this DIY? We were quoted upwards of $15,000 from a few closet companies and those quotes and plans didn’t even include drawers, floor to ceiling cabinetry or crown moulding. Everything…all materials, wood, drawers and drawer fronts, rods and handles cost a little less than $3,000.
In the end, this project was totally worth it! Were the contents of our entire closet thrown across our bedroom floor for months? Yes! But in the end, we got our dream closets for fractions of the cost and one that was higher in quality and truly a labor of love.

Where did you get the drawers and drawer fronts from?
Michele Brown says
They were from The Cabinet Door Store. I just linked their site in the blog post. Thank you!

Hello! I searched the link for the closet rods you used. I couldn’t find brushed gold. Only polished and satin Brass.

They may no longer make it in the satin brass then or possibly they are out of stock. I would give their customer service a call and hopefully they can direct you to the right finish.
