Short on space in a room? Reid’s room has large windows that take up two walls! He had been asking for a desk for quite some time and since we were short on wall space we decided to build a floating desk!
It’s functional, just the right amount of desk space for doing homework and doesn’t take up a ton of space in the room! This was easy to build, didn’t break the bank and I love the industrial style look in his bedroom!
You can really customize the length and width to fit any space in your home! We used 4 – 5 1/2″ pieces of select pine boards, each 1″ thick. One of the boards was cut to approximately 3 1/2″ for a total width of almost 20″ which for Reid was plenty of desk space. We installed these 33″ from the floor.
Each board was then cut lengthwise to 40″ each. We secured the boards to the wall by installing a 1 1/2″ piece of wood to each wall, back and side. The desk top was then placed on top of that with a 1″ piece secured to the middle. Here are a few photos of the underneath of the desk.
For extra support and because I loved the industrial look, we added exposed piping to the side. This was picked up at our local Home Depot, put together, installed into the wall and then the desk was nailed to it underneath.
I stained the top with my special mix of Minwax Dark Walnut and Classic Gray and picked up the cutest stool at Tractor Supply. It’s adjustable in height and spins…perfect for a growing boy!
This floating desk is truly customizable for any space in your home and is a quick and easy weekend project!
