This post is long overdue but I am excited to finally share all the details on the fireplace we added to our master bedroom! We have a long, long wall in our master and I went back and forth on what I wanted to add to the space. It needed SOMETHING!
We finally decided to warm up the space and create a focal point with a fireplace! You could really make this your own, choose a different surround for the fireplace and customize this to your space and style. I wouldn’t say this was a beginner project but if you have the right tools and framing and tiling skills, it is certainly an easy project to complete. It did take a few weekends to get it done but I am so happy with the way it turned out! We plan on adding another to our basement.
I will share the steps we did in completing the project. I won’t share actual measurements as every space is different. We took careful measurements before framing, tiling and deciding on the right sized fireplace insert. *I will source everything below as well. I LOVE the cement tile we choose and the insert adds great ambiance to the space and heat when needed!
STEP ONE – FRAMING Again, we measured so that the fireplace was pretty centered in the space and we framed it out floor to ceiling. We have 9′ ceilings and the fireplace is 75″ across. We used 2x4s from our local Home Depot to frame it all out, making room for the fireplace insert.
STEP TWO – ADD SHIPLAP We measured how high we wanted the mantle to be and then added primed shiplap boards from Home Depot all the way to the ceiling. We also added them to each side, floor to ceiling, of the fireplace.
STEP THREE – MEASURE THE BACKER BOARD & INSTALL We used hardiebacker board for the tile. We measured and cut before installing the cement tiles, cutting out a space for the fireplace insert.
STEP FOUR – CUT AND INSTALL CEMENT TILES Next we cut and installed cement tiles. I love the tiles we picked out. They are the Estrella pattern from Riad Tile. They are just gorgeous and were easy to cut and install.
STEP FIVE – BUILD AND INSTALL MANTLE Once the tile was installed, we measured and built the mantle and side posts. We installed the side posts first and then the mantle on top.
STEP SIX – GROUT AND SEAL THE TILE Once the mantle was installed, we grouted the tile and then sealed it. We used a premium mortar for tile and stone from the brand Mapei and then sealed the cement tiles with 511 Porous Plus Sealer.
STEP SEVEN – FINISH OFF WITH TRIM AND CROWN MOULDING We added crown moulding to the top and then added trim pieces to the corners of the posts and side walls where the shiplap met the wall. This gave the whole fireplace a nice, finished looks.
STEP EIGHT – PRIME AND PAINT Lastly, we primed and painted all the shiplap, mantle and posts. We did one coat of primer and then two coats of paint. I used the same shade of white paint we have throughout our entire home, Alabaster by Sherwin Williams.
Here is the finished result! I love the way it turned out! It truly warmed up the entire space and is now a focal point in the whole room! We turn the fireplace on for ambiance but it also can be turned on to heat up the space. I love the two options. It also came with two different style options that you can easily switch out, faux wood logs or crystals. Like I mentioned above, this project really adds a WOW factor to any room and can be built for your space and decor style!
