I am so excited to share one of my favorite DIYs, one that adds quite the impact to any space…a full board & batten wall. This was an easy weekend project that only required a few cuts of wood and paint. Ms Lily’s room is has quite a unique shape with a small alcove that this worked perfectly in. I love how it added interest and dimension to her room and really added something unique to the space.
To get started, you really need to plan how you are going to lay out the boards on the wall. I knew I wanted at least 4 sets of boxes going across. We took some measurements, most specifically the height and length of the wall and then divided up the length to get boxes. Also keep in mind the width of your boards as well.
We first framed out the entire wall using boards that were 3.5″ in width and cut them to fit. Also keep in mind your baseboard moulding. We placed one board at the ceiling going across in length and then two boards on each side.
Next, we placed two more boards going horizontally across. All the boards we used were 3.5″ in width to make the whole wall look uniform. The baseboard moulding is what we have throughout our home and was already in place. Again, this is when your initial measurements come in to determine how many boards you will need going across.
Lastly, you will make all the cuts for your vertical boards. Again, this is where your initial measurements will come in and where you determined the size for each box. We cut 9 boards, again all 3.5″ in width each about 28″ long and nailed them each into the wall to create our boxes. Also keep in mind any outlets or light switches.
And that is it! To finish up this project, all the boards were caulked and nail holes were all filled in and sanded. I also painted the entire wall the same color, Alabaster by Sherwin Williams in semi gloss, that includes all the boards and the insides of each box (aka: the wall). This makes it all look uniform.
Again, this is an easy weekend project that makes a big impact in any space! I just love how it looks in Lily’s room with her gray dresser up against it! It really adds so many character and charm to her space.
