Our master closet is finally done after months and months of hard work! Getting it organized was a huge priority of mine! I wanted to make it not only look “oh so pretty” every time I walked in, but I wanted everything accessible and easy to find. It took a few days and a couple of trips to The Container Store but I finally got it all organized in a way that was easy to maintain and pretty to look at. Here are a few tips in getting your master closet more organized!
TIP #1: Take everything out and PURGE, PURGE, PURGE! I know it may be hard to let go of things BUT if you haven’t worn it in over a year, if it’s out of style or it has any rips or holes, donate it or trash it depending on its condition. If you have a lot of motivation in you, set up an account on Poshmark and try to sell items and make a little cash! Either way, getting rid of the clutter is the first step to a more organized closet!
TIP #2: Dedicate a spot for everything! Take a step back and really look at the space and storage you have to use. Items that I wear all the time, I put in drawers or on shelves that I have easy access to. Seasonal items, such as swimwear, I dedicate a storage basket too that I can easily pull down once beach season is here! Dress shoes are placed on a higher shelf then shoes I wear on a daily basis. Once everything has a dedicated spot, it truly makes not only finding things easier, but when it comes time to put things away, it really speeds up the process. You will know where everything is and where everything goes back to! I also try and leave a few shelves open just in case I get new things or need extra room. Empty shelves are a GOOD thing in my opinion.
TIP #3: Ditch the mismatched hangers and invest in a set that matches, is nonslip and ones that will really maximize your hanging space. I love these velvet hangers. You can buy them at your local Home Goods or on Amazon. They come in a ton of colors and not only look pretty but maximize space for all your hanging clothes.
TIP #4: Use bins and baskets as much as you can especially for smaller items such as socks, belts, hats etc. It gives the whole closet a much cleaner look and keeps all the smaller items contained in one bin. When shopping for bins and baskets, I chose 2-3 that were in the same color family for consistency. All in all, no matter what bins and baskets you choose, they are great for containing the any clutter and easily accessing items when needed.
TIP #5: I fold all our sweaters, t-shirts, and anything that goes into a drawer by laying them flat, folding the arms in and then folding the shirt in half. It takes a bit of practice {maybe all those years working at the mall in high school helped} but I promise once you get the hang of it, it really is a space saver when storing sweaters, sweatshirts, or any folded items. They fit better on the shelf and in the drawers and it truly does maximize any space you have and let’s be honest, it looks really pretty too!
TIP #6: A bit of an initial tedious process but one that is worth it and easy to maintain is color coding all your hanging items. Lay them all out on the floor and have at it. It makes it so much easier when you are getting dressed and need to find something. Once you have it done, I promise its easy to maintain!
I hope this helps in organizing the clutter that can become of any master closet. My biggest piece of advice is once you have a spot or shelf, bin or basket designated to something, it is so much easier to contain the mess and keep things organized on a daily basis. Happy organizing!
